  • More equal than others!!

“Statistics are like a short skirts. They hide a lot more than they reveal.”

This is a quote that is used very often by cricket commentators and gurus. I am however baffled what these statistics reveal and hide. Sehwag in his last 50 innings (excluding todays) has scored 1381 runs at 28.77 with 7 fifties and a century. Ganguly on the other hand in his last 50 had scored 1403 at 30.50 with 10 fifties. Is there something that I dont understand about perform or perish policy of the indian selection committee?

Meanwhile, India keeps winning ODIs (from amazing situations) and losing out badly in Tests (ones that really matter).

Update: Meanwhile, Greg has this to say about Kaif and Sehwag. (All emphasis mine)

“Both Sehwag and Kaif are experienced players and both have been successful. They got have the skill that we need to have a good team. We will give them as many chances as we can and they need that.”

    And this for Ganguly.

“Who knows? You can’t change the team all the time. We are looking for particular type of players to match the players that we already have and we are reasonably comfortable with that. I don’t think there will be wholesale changes.” (Read: Not while I am there. And Kiran More, of course.)

  • Through her eyes!!

Brings tears to my eyes and confirms my faith that some people do beat death. The true hero. The terrorists failed in their attempt. Death failed.

Death you bastard!! You lose!! He lives!!

  • Yesterday Once More

    Deja Vu!!

Sonia “hurt” Gandhi (man she keeps getting hurt, doesn’t she) is a true Gandhi (dismiss the Parliament and make an ordinance e.g, Emergency and Shah Bano) and a great politician. One more “tyag”. I can just imagine the burden the nation bears due to the number of sacrifices she has made for it. Unimportantly, this one comes when she was almost about to lose her LS seat due to a Congress tactic going horribly wrong. And she is suposed to have called the BJP bluff. She is indeed a Mahan lady. Lets us all bend (over) in front of her.

Meanwhile, a pinko senior leader Nilotpal Basu (Who??? I am from Bengal as a matter of fact) says “We know what the BJP did with the Constitution in Gujarat“. Yeah, so we should all go ahead and do something equally good. Shouldn’t we.

By the way, if I am not mistaken arent’t SP and CPI supposed to be getting all cosy and trying to form a Third Front (to fight communal forces), Congress and CPI are baying for each others blood in Kerela and SP in the meanwhile is supporting the Congress in the centre. I (inspired by Einstein) don’t understand three things in the world. Women, Taxes, and the most of all, Indian politics.

  • India loses Mumbai Test

Sachins 132nd. Dravids 100th. Dravid captain till 2007. Join the Dravid Fan Club. A few highlights of the Mumbai test. Oh, forgot one. India loses Mumbai test by 212 runs!!!

This is not a Dravid bashing post but highlights his failures. Going in a test with 5 bowlers an you opt for batting second?? Inexplicable (But thats a team decision right!! I think someone should answer, Chappel may be). Droppping catches like crazy (teams problem). India dropped no less than 15 catches in the slip cordon alone Now what has Dravid got to do with it. Oh, did I mention he dropped 5 of those (but he also took the great ones)? And Dravid is a good slip fielder. Again Yuvraj left many in the silly point position (not Dravids fault), but persisting with him there (I guess who is to blame). Not having Sachin in slips for consultation, and Sachin is a good slip fielder (someone is to blame).

Dravid is a great batsman, perhaps the best India has produced in a long time. But he is no match for Ganguly as a captain. And please I am a Dravid fan. Not a Chappel one though.

     Meanwhile something to cheer 🙂

  • The weekend that was!!

So what did I do this weekend. if I list it out then it becomes pretty simple. A nice, and relaxed weekend. So I will actually list it out.

    1. Watched Rashomon. Brilliant. Now I know why Balu kept on talking about this director. Simple plot. Brilliant narration. Awesome acting. And facial expressions that ermoves the language barrier. 5 on 5 to it.

    2. Watched Baharain Grand Prix. Heartbroken. Schumi lost. But nice to see him back to where he belongs. Top of the lot. Must say that though Alonso is good, it is Kimi who I predict to take on Schumi this season. And the title will be closely fought for by the three.

    3. Watched parts of Aus vs. RSA. Unbelieveable. 434 getting chased. Ponting must be actually wondering what went wrong. To me any ground with such short side boundaries arent good for one dayers. Bowlers were getting clobbered like crazy. Anything the batsmen touched most times reached the boundaries. But great chase none the less.

    4. Watched Transamerica. Mixed it up with North Country but a very good movie none the less. Dragged Bansal along. He might still be cursing me 🙂 Traces a week in the life of a transexual, just before he is supposed to become a woman and he spends the week with his son. Great acting and a sensitive subject very well handled. Must watch. 4 on 5 to it.

    5. Last but not the least. Attended a CII conference on Biotech. I must say that seeing the people in charge of the business in India, I was thoroughly disappointed and understood why no innovation has taken place in India in this field by the private sector. Their view is so narrow. One of the gentlemen said that Biotech is not IT (a very high poisition holding guy). Surely it isn’t. You people do not aim as high or world class as Premji or NRM or anyone else. They all kept cribbing about the high cost of infrastructure whereas one new discovery in the same field, could finance for them 10 new labs. Come on guys dream big. Only sane voice was that of a female (Ph.D. from NII) from Dabur Research Foundation (Dr Rama Mukherjee, Director). She said it was imperative that we look for more collaboration between the industry and the academia. Very well said since DRF is one such foundation. I talked to her after the conference (over some good lunch) and she did remember the project Dr Das was executing and I was proud member of the team. A def high for me 🙂
